Background of the Study
Environmental education (EE) has become a pivotal part of global efforts to address ecological challenges, promoting sustainable practices and awareness from an early age. In Nigeria, the role of teachers in delivering environmental education is crucial, as they are often the first point of contact for shaping young people's understanding of environmental issues. Ilorin East Local Government Area (LGA) in Kwara State is no exception, with educational institutions playing a significant role in nurturing environmentally conscious citizens. Teachers are tasked with imparting knowledge about the importance of conservation, climate change, waste management, and biodiversity. However, despite the acknowledged importance of environmental education, its integration into the curriculum remains inconsistent. The challenge lies in the adequacy of teaching resources, the teachers' capacity to effectively teach environmental issues, and the engagement of students in these matters. This study will explore the role of teachers in promoting environmental education in Ilorin East LGA and assess the effectiveness of their efforts in influencing students’ environmental behaviors (Oluwatoyin & Salawu, 2023).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing awareness of environmental challenges, there remains a gap in the effective delivery of environmental education in schools in Ilorin East LGA. Teachers, who are critical in shaping the next generation’s understanding of environmental issues, face challenges such as inadequate training, lack of resources, and insufficient institutional support. The study seeks to evaluate the role of teachers in promoting environmental education, identify barriers they face, and explore ways to enhance the effectiveness of environmental education programs in schools within Ilorin East LGA.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
• To evaluate the extent to which teachers in Ilorin East LGA incorporate environmental education into their teaching.
• To identify the challenges faced by teachers in promoting environmental education in the area.
• To recommend strategies for improving environmental education in schools in Ilorin East LGA.
1.4 Research Questions

• What challenges do teachers face in teaching environmental education effectively?
• What strategies can be adopted to improve the role of teachers in environmental education in Ilorin East LGA?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
• H1: Teachers in Ilorin East LGA face significant challenges in promoting environmental education due to inadequate resources and training.
• H2: The integration of environmental education in the curriculum has a positive effect on students' environmental awareness and behaviors.
• H3: Improving teachers' capacity and resources will enhance the effectiveness of environmental education in schools.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings from this study will provide valuable insights into the role of teachers in environmental education within Ilorin East LGA. It will contribute to the development of policies aimed at strengthening environmental education programs in schools. Furthermore, it will assist in identifying gaps in teacher preparedness and curriculum design, with implications for improved teaching strategies and resource allocation (Oluwatoyin & Salawu, 2023).
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on teachers in public and private schools in Ilorin East LGA, Kwara State. It will assess their engagement with environmental education, identify challenges, and propose recommendations. Limitations may include the difficulty in accessing all teachers or obtaining reliable data from schools with limited documentation of their environmental education practices.
